Sgt. Tony Dyer On WHY he is involved with Fort Villanow Veterans Project

Many people have asked me personally why I became involved with the Fort Villanow Veterans Project.

Like many people I was looking for something to do. While watching the news and seeing news reporters go out and ask college kids simple questions like who the first President of the United States was….and they couldn’t answer it.

I am a retired seventy-two year old and I remember that every school room had a picture of George Washington in it. I have noticed a lot of these young kids today and I started wondering what the problem is. Well, when I was growing up, the mother stayed home and taught the kids about the American Flag and helped with their homework. Today it takes both Mother and Father to make a living so therein lays most of the problem.

Fort Villanow Veterans decided to do something to help. We started a kid’s survival camp that lasts two months. We teach them simple techniques like how to build a fire, read a compass and a chance to learn more about our country and flag.  These are just some of the things that us older Veterans can offer and allows us to get off our butts and do our share.

We were taught right from wrong. Like the police for instance and the importance of their job. Law enforcement is out there to protect us.

There are MANY things wrong with the younger generation.

By teaching our younger generation, I believe that we, older guys and gals need to step forward and do something.  So I am inviting you to join us here at Fort Villanow. It is wonderful to see the expressions on their faces. If is also simple, free and rewarding. These kids really get into it.

If you feel like I do and have the dedication to help others I invite you to do what I did. You will be surprised how good it will make you feel.

That is why I got involved. We have many projects but this is the most important. Veterans (and Civilians) are welcome!

Thank you.

Sgt. Tony Dyer

Free Fishing License In Texas!

We are pleased to announce that Executive Director Carter Smith of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has officially waived the fishing license requirement for events held by Fort Villanow Veterans Project! A planned trip to Texas is in the works and will be disused in a meeting on March 25th, 2017 at Fort Villanow. Feel free to send us an email if you have any questions or comments at ftvillanow@gmail.com

Hunting and Fishing Trips

Fort Villanow is in the planning process of arranging hunting and fishing trips to the Land of Lakes area in Kentucky, the Richmond, Virginia area, and Missoula, Montana. We are in need of funding for travel expenses such as food and gas. If you would like to help fund this operation or donate anything toward the cause please go to our go fund me page at:  https://www.gofundme.com/58-fort-villanow-veterans-project

Or donate directly to the Fort.

No gift is too small or large and you can sponsor a veteran of your own choice!

Marble Memorial Stones

With all the VA red tape, and complications in finding a copy of a DD2-14, more and more people have been contacting us about memorial monument issues. The cost of a marble plaque that includes a Veterans name, branch and date of service is only $75.00. We would like to help raise funds toward this using our go fund me page located here. If you have a specific Veteran that you would like to donate toward just let us know by stating it on the website or by sending us an email at ftvillanow@gmail.com. An example of what the plaque will look like is pictured below.

Thank you and GOD BLESS!

Memorial Benefits For Headstones and Markers

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) furnishes upon request, at no charge to the applicant, a Government headstone or marker for the unmarked grave of any deceased eligible Veteran in any cemetery around the world, regardless of their date of death.

For eligible veterans that died on or after Nov. 1, 1990 and whose grave is marked with a privately purchased headstone, VA may also furnish a headstone or marker to supplement the graves or a Medallion to be affixed to a privately purchased headstone.

Flat markers in granite, marble, and bronze and upright headstones in granite and marble are available. Bronze niche markers are also available to mark columbaria used for inurnment of cremated remains. The style chosen must be permitted by the officials in charge of the private cemetery where it will be placed.

When burial or memorialization is in a national cemetery, state Veterans' cemetery, or military post/base cemetery, a headstone or marker will be ordered by the cemetery officials based on inscription information provided by the next of kin or authorized representative.

Spouses and dependents are not eligible for a Government-furnished headstone or marker unless they are buried in a national cemetery, state Veteran's cemetery, or military post/base cemetery.

Note: There is no charge for the headstone or marker itself, however arrangements for placing it in a private cemetery are the applicant's responsibility and all setting fees are at private expense.

Eligibility

Eligibility for a VA headstone or marker is the same as for burial in a national cemetery. VA cannot issue a headstone or marker for a spouse or dependent buried in a private cemetery. Twenty-year reservists without active-duty service are eligible for a headstone or grave marker, if they are entitled to military retired pay at the time of death.

Who Can Apply

Only the following individuals may apply for a headstone, marker or medallion:

  1. Decedent's next-of-kin (NOK)
  2. Authorized representative on behalf of decedent
  3. Authorized representative on behalf of next-of-kin

If someone other than the NOK is applying for the headstone, marker or medallion, the application package must include a written statement signed by the NOK or decedent authorizing that person (the applicant) to apply for this benefit. A notarized statement is not required for these purposes.

National, Post, or State Veterans' Cemetery
A headstone or marker will be ordered by the cemetery officials based on inscription information provided by the next of kin.

Private Cemetery
To receive a headstone, marker, or medallion, the eligible applicant must submit a VA Form 40-1330, Claim for Standard Government Headstone or Marker or VA Form 40-1330M, Claim for Government Medallion to the VA along with proof of military service, to request a Government-provided headstone or marker. Do not send original documents, as they will not be returned.

Free Hunting and Fishing License for Veterans

THE PROPOSAL:

-To pass a bill that allows all Veterans Honorably Discharged to receive a FREE hunting and fishing license anywhere in the United States on Government property.

 WHY?

-22 Veterans commit suicide everyday due to PTSD.

-The benefits of this bill is to not only allow free fishing and hunting licenses to Veterans, but to allow them the freedom of being able to go and visit the people they served with from state to state without any extra licensing expenses.

-A simple truth: The people most Veterans have served with are rarely from the same state they are from. Having a free license that is valid in any state allows a Veteran to be able to hunt and fish with them and without any additional cost.

-Here at Fort Villanow Veterans project, we have not only the facility along with the resources, but the volunteers to make it possible, thereby eliminating the burden off of the tax payer

Fort Villanow Veterans Project has a very simple yet specific mission “giving veterans and their families a haven of hope”. It is a place that invites Veterans, from any branch of service to come and fellowship together. The Fort also hosts a plethora of events, ranging from scuba diving and snorkeling lessons for wounded warriors to fishing and hunting excursions. It provides the perfect comfort zone for people who have had similar war-time experiences and strives to do whatever they can to help fellow Veterans to win the war on PTSD. To help veterans win this war, the Fort is currently trying to get a bill passed that allows Veterans Honorably Discharged to receive a FREE hunting and fishing license anywhere in the United States on Government property.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious condition that usually develops after a person has experienced a traumatic event during their life. The condition can cause intense fear and helplessness and create reactions that may include shock, anger, nervousness, fear, and even guilt. These reactions are common for a person with PTSD, and in most cases, if untreated, these feelings continue and can even increase, becoming so strong that they keep the person from living a normal life.

Studies have shown the benefits of hunting and fishing in the lives of people who suffer from PTSD, allowing physical and emotional healing. In England, there was a study done by Dr. Cooper, head of the psychology department in Essex University. The study was to focus on whether the pleasures of fishing and spending time in the great outdoors with likeminded individuals could help alleviate symptoms faced by military veterans diagnosed with PTSD. They took eleven Veterans, through the ages of 25 and 55 for a weekend long fishing trip. Three days before the trip, they did a psychological analysis on each participant. Three days after the trip, they did another psychological analysis. In each participant, there PTSD symptoms had significantly IMPROVED, and just from that one fishing trip alone.

Psychiatric experts across THE WORLD even agree on the benefits hunting alone can provide. Hunting trips allow opportunities for teamwork, fellowship, and a type of competitiveness that can sometimes be absent from normal everyday life. Unfortunately, there is a common stereotype that comes with any activity that involves the combination of guns and PTSD. But common does not mean universal and not one person, not even one case, is ever the same. The combination of having a free fishing along with a hunting license gives a Veteran an easy and convenient option for both and on a much more personal basis.

For people serving in the military, there is a simple truth. The people they served with, went to war with, saved lives with… Are very rarely from the same state they are from. Having a free license that is valid in any state allows a Veteran to be able to visit the people he served with and without any additional cost.

Twenty-two Veterans commit suicide everyday due to PTSD. This is completely unacceptable. If study’s upon study’s show the benefits of hunting and fishing, why not pass this bill to help? Fort Villanow has the facility, the resource’s and the volunteers to make this possible and wants to get this bill passed in order to help our fellow Veterans; wouldn’t you like to see it passed too?

Veteran March to Washington, D.C.

This September!

Join the Veterans of Fort Villanow for a hike to Washington, D.C.

The purpose of the hike is to tell Washington that our military service members have earned the right to hunt and fish without paying fees.

We fought to protect this land and we feel that we have earned the right to hunt and fish on it without paying for a license. If you agree, join us for part or all of the journey.

Unified Veterans Foundation & Fort Villanow's PTSD Memorial Cross

The Fort would like to recognize and say thank you to Army Veteran and Unified Veterans Foundation founder, George Eshleman.

George is on a journey. He and a growing band of veteran brothers are hiking on foot. They carry with them the names of the brothers they've lost to PTSD, bringing awareness to everyone they meet on their trek.

We will be placing these names on the PTSD Memorial Cross at Fort Villanow.

To learn more about the Unified Veterans Foundation, you can visit their Facebook page here:

A Very Special Memorial coming to Fort Villanow

There are many veteran and military memorials around the country but the veterans at Fort Villanow want to create a different kind of memorial.. one for our combat heroes who lost their final battle to PTSD.

A Memorial to bring awareness to PTSD and
To recognize those of our ranks who lost the war with the enemy inside.

If you have a loved one who served in our Military, suffered from PTSD and has passed away as a result, you can request that their name be added to the cross. Call or email us for details and information.
